Dear Parents/Guardians & Animal Rights Activists,

Over the next 2 weeks our fourth grade class is going to be learning about Animal Rights and the humane treatment of animals. I feel it is very important for our students to establish compassion, empathy, respect, kindness, and a sense of responsibility not only for the people around them, but for animals as well as all living things. We will begin out unit by looking at how animals are important and special in their own ways, just like people.

As the unit progresses we are going to be learning about how animals have similar basic needs as people, reasons why it is important to protect the habitats of animals, laws that protect animals, identifying the difference between companion animals and wildlife animals , and identifying ways we can make changes in our own lives and in the community to help animals.

At the end of this unit the class will be taking part in a service learning project. Students will have researched different animal shelters in our local neighborhoods and as a class we will choose one that we feel has animals in their best interest, but could use our help. We will organize a drive to collect towels, blankets, and food for the animals at this shelter. Students will be broken up into groups and they will collect donations, create posters to get the word out about our drive, create pamphlets about the organization and distribute them, among other things. I will also be sending home a permission slip shortly asking if you will allow your child to partake in the delivery of these goods to the shelter. I feel that it will make a much greater impact if the students get to see the difference they have made.

I encourage you to ask your child to show you our class wiki-space that we will be collaborating on. There are many helpful resources on there for reinforcement, as well as opportunities to further their learning.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Yours in teaching,
Ms. Clarke
